What is "proposition poker"?

Proposition poker can take many forms.  At its essence, proposition poker players are paid by the house to sit at their tables and play poker.

Why would the house do this?

There are a couple of reasons online poker sites offer proposition poker.

The primary reason that online poker sites offer proposition deals is to ensure that players who have just signed up as new customers are likely to find games to play when they login.  For this reason, you will find that it is the newer online poker sites that typically offer these types of deals until their customer base reaches a ‘critical mass’ and is capable of supporting itself without using proposition players.

The deals offered to proposition players, in all their forms, usually come down to giving the player back some of the expected rake that he/she would be paying if they were NOT playing as a proposition player.  Because of this, prop players don’t really cost the online poker site anything, and it encourages these players to make that poker site their preferred cardroom.  With rakes as high as 10%, NOT paying a full rake can add substantially to your long-term earnings.  This is a significant edge that makes proposition play a wise move for frequent players (10+ hours a week).

Things to consider when deciding if proposition play is for you:

1.  Do you play well at short-handed tables?

Proposition players have guidelines that they must adhere to in order to receive their payment.  Some sites require that you be the first player seated at a table.  Others will only pay you for playing at a table while it is shorthanded and stop the clock when the table reaches a fixed level of players.  Either way, you will find yourself playing at LESS than full tables at least part of the time.  If you are not comfortable playing short-handed, proposition play might not be for you.

2.      Do you play enough online poker?

If you only play recreationally once or twice a week for a couple of hours, proposition play might not be for you.  Finding games that are within your guidelines that also qualify for proposition pay might be a hassle.  If you play infrequently, you may be better off playing at more established sites where you can instantly find just about any type of game you want to play.

3.      On a relative basis, is the proposition deal a good one?

How does the site’s complete offering (including expected bonuses that you can earn) compare with the offerings of other sites?  Are you getting your full rake back? Partial?  Are they offering an hourly rate?  How does that compare to rake refunds offered by other sites?  What kinds of restrictions are there on the games you can join and get paid for playing?  For full details on InterPoker's Proposition Poker offer, click here.
